Meet the Artist

Wisdom Travels is a collaboration that brings to life the idea that active transportation enriches lives and sharing our collective experiences will inspire others.

As part of a city-wide effort to bring art to local communities, the City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture launched its first Artist in Residency Program in late 2019. One artist was selected to work with a community organization from each city district to develop community-based art projects about that place. For District 1, documentary photographer Janine Mapurunga collaborated with North Natomas Jibe. Wisdom Travels is the result of this partnership.

Wisdom Travels features nine personal narratives about active transportation told by North Natomas elders aged 50+. Residents were photographed and interviewed at their homes, on local trails, and at neighborhood parks. Some participants provided additional family photos for use in this public and online installation project.
