Chains and Derailleurs

Apply to this hands-on class to learn drivetrain and shifting mechanics fundamentals to stay squeak free!  You’ll learn a step-by-step process to help you get your bike to shift and pedal more smoothly.  You’ll also learn how to properly maintain and adjust your drivetrain and shifting system.

This class teaches you to:

  • Identify the parts of your drivetrain
  • Clean and lube your drivetrain
  • Do preventative maintenance
  • Inspect your drivetrain for common wear patterns and know when to replace parts
  • Adjust your front and rear derailleurs, and practice how limit screws work
  • Check cable tension
  • Assess when your chain needs replacement
  • Troubleshoot shifting problems

Small class size and low instructor to student ratios allow you to learn in a patient and supportive environment.

Bring your own non-electric bike if you want to work on it. We will not be teaching how to adjust electric shifting. This class uses bike stands, so please take extra bags off of your seat post. If you are unable to bring a bike, we have sample bikes or you will work in teams.

Enrollment is limited to 8, first come first served. Applicants must live or work in North Natomas.

This class will be offered in summer 2026.
